Factory charges no setup or monthly fees for Invoice Payments by card. Each card payment carries a processing fee. Stripe sets and collects that fee directly from your Stripe account, and supports your Stripe account.
Payments are taken in your company's currency (AUD, NZD, GBP, USD or CAD).
Who pays the fee
Market | Stripe processing fee | Who pays |
Australia | 1.65% + 30c plus GST | You |
United Kingdom | 1.5% + 20p (standard UK cards) | You |
New Zealand | 2.65% + 30c | Your customer, added at checkout |
United States | 2.9% + 30¢ | Your customer, added at checkout |
Canada | 2.9% + CA$0.30 | Your customer, added at checkout |
Australia
The Reserve Bank of Australia October 1st 2026 ruling means card surcharges are no longer allowed. For payments made through Factory, your customer pays the invoice amount only, on any card. No fee is added at checkout, on the invoice or on the receipt. This applies to every payment, including invoices you sent before the change.
Stripe takes the fee out of the payment before paying out, so your payout is less than the invoice total.
Example
Invoice total: $1,000.00
Your customer pays: $1,000.00
Processing fee: $16.80 + $1.68 GST = $18.48
Paid out to your bank: $981.52
Factory records the invoice as paid in full ($1,000). The fee isn't recorded in Factory or your accounting package, so you'll need to add it when you match the payout. See After a payment: accounting sync, refunds and disputes.
Cards issued outside Australia cost more: 3.5% + 30c. Your customer still pays the invoice amount only.
United Kingdom
Your customer pays the invoice amount only. No fee is added at checkout. Stripe takes the fee out of the payment before paying out, so your payout is less than the invoice total. Match payouts the same way as in Australia.
The fee depends on the card your customer uses:
Standard UK cards: 1.5% + 20p
Premium UK cards (such as business and rewards cards): 2.8% + 20p
European cards: 2.5% + 20p
Other international cards: 3.15% + 20p
Business customers often pay on premium cards, so expect some payments at the higher rate.
New Zealand, the United States and Canada
A card fee is added at checkout to cover Stripe's processing fee, and your customer sees it before they pay. The fee is calculated so you receive the full invoice amount. Because Stripe also charges its fee on the card fee itself, your customer pays slightly more than the rate in the table.
Example on a $1,000 invoice
New Zealand: customer pays NZ$1,027.53 (card fee NZ$27.53)
United States: customer pays US$1,030.18 (card fee US$30.18)
Canada: customer pays CA$1,030.18 (card fee CA$30.18)
In each case, you receive the full $1,000.
Keeping card costs covered
Build card costs into your pricing. Add them to your shop rate or quote markup, the same way you cover consumables.
Use card where it pays for itself. Getting a deposit paid today is worth more than the fee on most jobs.
Refunds and disputes
Stripe doesn't return the processing fee when you refund a payment. Disputes carry a separate Stripe dispute fee. See After a payment: accounting sync, refunds and disputes.
Payment limits
Stripe sets the limits, not Factory. New accounts start with a lower maximum that rises as you process more payments.
